What’s on!

26th of August - Onam

Onam is a major annual harvest festival celebrated in Kerala, marking the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. It is celebrated with grand feasts called Onasadya, traditional dances like Thiruvathira, boat races, and beautiful floral decorations known as Pookalam.

28th of August - Vallam Kali (Snake Boat Race) at Vembanad Backwaters

Vallam Kali is the traditional snake boat race held in Kerala during the festival of Onam. Long, beautifully decorated boats rowed by dozens of oarsmen compete in thrilling races, accompanied by rhythmic songs and cheering crowds.

Other events will be occurring around the area and will be publicised in May, 2026.

  • Our wedding coincides with Onam, one of Kerala's most significant festivals. Celebrated over ten days across the state, Onam marks the harvest season and is a time for celebration and togetherness. In 2026, the principal day of Onam (Thiruvonam) falls on 26 August 2026, with traditional celebrations occurring in the days surrounding it.

During this time, you may see intricate floral designs known as Pookalam, traditional music and dance performances. The atmosphere throughout Kerala is notably vibrant during this time of year.

One of the most spectacular traditions associated with Onam is the Vallamkali (the boat races), which are held on Kerala's serene backwaters.

  • Vallamkali is the traditional boat race held in Kerala during Onam. A race is scheduled for 28 August 2026 at the Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom, with final event date confirmation expected by April or May.

These races feature several classes of traditional boats, but the main attraction is the Chundan Vallam (snake boat). Often extending over one hundred feet in length, the Chundan Vallam is a specialised war vessel that originated in the 14th century, built for Kings and used in backwater warfare where speed, coordination and precise manoeuvring were essential. Over time, this practical skill evolved into a celebrated cultural tradition.

Each vessel is treated with reverence and maintained throughout the year using traditional methods, including careful oiling and polishing to preserve the wood and ensure peak performance. For communities that own them, the boats are a source of great pride and heritage, and dedicated teams of rowers train together in preparation for the races.

For guests arriving early, this offers a rare opportunity to witness one of Kerala’s most iconic and storied traditions just ahead of our wedding celebrations.
